Trek in the desert

Friday July 2, 2021

May the Lord your God show us the way to follow and the word to keep. Jeremiah 42. 3

They (the Israelites) drank from a spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10. 4

Trek in the desert

Those who have made treks (long hikes) in a desert environment undoubtedly understand more easily than others why God, in the Bible, compares the walk of the Christian in this world to a crossing of the desert. In the desert, everything is lacking : signposts, water, food. But there are often rocks, evoking stability and protection from the heat.

To survive in the desert, four things seem essential to us: having a guide, a sufficient supply of water and food, being well shod, and being able to find shelter in the hottest hours.

The Christian realizes that he has everything in Jesus Christ.

- He is our guide, he prepares the way and the life circumstances of those who have put their trust in him. He shows them the direction to take, as he guided the people of Israel in the desert by means of the cloud and the pillar of fire (Exodus 13. 21).

- The Word of God, the Bible, is often compared to the water which gives life. By reading it, we can be nourished, resourced. It is permanent, alive, always there to do us good.

- To walk, we must be well shod with this zeal to proclaim the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15), the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, wherever our steps lead us.

- Finally, Christ is this rock on which we lean, under which we shelter ourselves and which gives us freshness. So the Christian can peacefully consider moving forward in this difficult world.
