Trust her, even in the dead of night

“And the other nine, where are they ?” Luke 17. 17

One day ten men with leprosy came to meet Jesus to implore Him : "Have mercy on us !" They thus recognized their desperate need for help and mercy. Jesus' response was very simple : “Go and show yourself to the priests.” The Bible tells us that they were healed on the way (Luke 17-14). But the story does not end there. “One of them, seeing himself healed, retraced his steps giving glory to God aloud. He fell on his face to the ground at Jesus' feet and thanked him. He was a Samaritan” (Luke 17. 15-16). The rest of the story is interesting. Jesus then asked him “And the other nine, where are they ?” Jesus thus showed to all how important in His eyes the grateful attitude of this man. This story has been brought to us to teach us how valuable a thankful heart is before God. Two sentences are important here : “He retraced his steps...” and “The other nine, where are they ?” Gratitude demands that we retrace our steps to thank the One who made all our successes and victories possible. Recognition is not a natural feeling in our human heart, it is the fruit of a long learning, of a well established discipline. No one instinctively feels that they are not deserving of divine favors and benefiting from them out of sheer grace. Let us never forget that we are only the humble stewards of all that we own here on earth. Like the old cowboy who elegantly raises his hat to express his gratitude for the unexpected help he has just received and simply says : “Thank you so much !”, We too must express our gratitude to Him with humility. Recognize that we are unable to fend for ourselves in life, that we depend on His support and the help of those He has placed in our path. Appreciate the value of what we receive. Let us fill our hearts with joy, because our life can only truly shine with joy if we also agree to give and support others !
