Eternal! you search me and you know me... Such a marvelous science is beyond my reach, it is too high for me to grasp. Psalm 139. 1, 6
Unanswered questions ?
Gladys Aylward (1902-1970) wanted to serve the Lord in China. When she arrived there after an interminable journey, she was welcomed by a missionary woman who advised her to wear Chinese clothes, because the Chinese were very suspicious of foreigners. Gladys put this advice to good use. When the missionary saw her thus dressed, she said to her :
- With these clothes, you really look like a Chinese girl! You have straight black hair, and you're petite, just like them. Stand in front of the mirror !
Gladys looked at herself and remained thoughtful for a long moment. Then she says :
- When I was little, I was very annoyed by two things. First, my hair was black and straight. I had never seen such ugly ones. Second, I was the only one who was short while all my family members were tall. At that time, I often thought : it's not fair. But today I understand why I have black hair and I stayed small. God had planned everything in his wisdom.
It was only twenty years later that Gladys received a complete answer to her questions : why God had created her this way and not otherwise. She was indeed well accepted by the Chinese population and God gave her a useful and blessed service among the orphans.
If God allows something in our life that causes us pain and raises questions, it may be that we have not yet arrived in our "China" ! But he will know how to answer us in his time.
