"Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not you do what I say ? I will show you who is like every man who comes to me, who hears my words and practices them ; He is like a man who builds a house, who digged and searched deep, then laid the foundation on the rock ; And when a flood came, the river threw itself violently against this house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. "Luke 6: 46-48
In this parable, the Lord gives a warning to his listeners as to us today.
The Lord first speaks of a house built on the rock and then of another house built on the sand. These two houses are apparently similar. No one can discern any visible differences between them, but the test of a storm will make them appear dramatic : one resists flooding because its foundations are laid on the rock, the other is carried away by the current .
The Lord declares that the first house is the image of a man who comes to him (accepts salvation), hears his words (accepts teaching) and puts them into practice (accepts obedience). If I obey Jesus Christ, it is because I believe in him and receive his teaching.
The first commandment of the Lord is that we love one another unconditionally. Peter prescribes it to the children of God : "Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth, to have a fraternal affection without hypocrisy, love one another ardently, with a pure heart" (1 Pet. 1.22).
The Bible asks us to do good to all and, above all, to those of the house of faith (Galatians 6: 10). When he was on earth among his compatriots, Jesus took care of the needs of souls and bodies. He has accomplished himself what he commands us to each. Am I his imitator ? Relations with my fellow men are sometimes difficult. Like a violent torrent, attacks sometimes suddenly put my foundations to the test. It is then that it will be demonstrated whether I am in the habit of loving with grace, patience, the sweetness of Christ, or whether my love is merely theoretical.
Do not just tell this parable to the children, let's put it into practice ! They are watching us !
