We didn't do anything for him

They give me back bad for good, and hate for my love. Psalm 109:5

Mordecai sits at the gate of King Ahasuerus. Two guards have mounted a plot against this sovereign to assassinate him. Mordecai warns Queen Esther. An investigation is made, the information is found to be correct, the two men are found guilty and are hanged. Mordecai's act of loyalty is written in the Annals of Empire book (Esther 2:19-23).

One night when the king is not sleeping, we read to him in this book the account of Mordecai's intervention. The king then asks : What honor and what distinction have been conferred on Mordecai, because of this ? The servants in office with the king recognize : We didn't do anything for him (Esther 6:3). Hearing this, the king orders Mordecai to become the one the king likes to honor.

Mordecai reminds us of Jesus. Already when he was born there was no room for them in the inn, neither for him, nor for Mary and Joseph (Luke 2:7). If everything in his life as a servant on earth was fidelity to God and kindness to man, what honor and what distinction did men give him ? The answer is the same as for Mordecai : nothing was done for him ! Jealous religious leaders sought to put him to death, and Jesus allowed himself to be crucified like a thief.

But he to whom men have bestowed no honor, no distinction, God has honored, and exalted by his right hand Prince and Savior (Acts 5:31). Already at the Jordan, God publicly declares : This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my pleasure (Matthew 3:17) ; then on the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus received honor and glory from God the Father (2 Peter 1:17).

After the cross, on the glorious day of the resurrection, God delivers his Son who so perfectly glorified him, proclaims him Lord and Christ, sits him on his right hand and crowns him with glory and honor.

Soon he will be glorified before all the universe so that in the name of Jesus all knees of heavenly, earthly and infernal beings bow down, and that every tongue recognize that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2: 10.11).
