The Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silence before him ! Habakuk 2. 20
Silence before the Lord, the Eternal ! Indeed, the day of the Lord is at hand. Zephaniah 1. 7
Welcome the silence
One of the surprises of confinement has been, for many city dwellers, the discovery of silence, even in the usually busiest city center. Did we know how to listen to him ?
To solve a difficult problem, engrave a memory in our memory, project ourselves into the future, reflect, invent, silence is advised. How to hear someone who speaks to us, without remaining silence ? Moses had asked the people he was guiding : "Be silence and listen... You will listen to the voice of the Eternal, your God, and you will do his commandments" (Deuteronomy 27. 9, 10).
To listen to God, let's seek silence outside, at the most auspicious time of day. Jesus recommended isolating oneself to pray : "Go into your room, close your door and pray to your Father" (Matthew 6. 6). Let's also be silent inside, within us. Our thoughts, our imagination, our ever active spirit must be attentive to the divine voice. If we were aware of the greatness and wisdom of our God, with what attention we would listen to him !
And if we know well how to turn to God when we are at the end of our resources, are we ready to listen to him when all is well ?
Generally speaking, God is too little sought, even less listened to. One day, when he judges the world, he will impose silence, just as he allowed the activity of the world to be stopped by a tiny virus. Every mouth will then be closed. Today he speaks to us with love, do we remain silent to listen to him ?
