What encouragement ?

Thursday, 20 July 2023

I trust in God, I fear nothing. Psalm 56.5

God is for us a refuge and a support, a help that never fails in distress. Psalm 46. 2

What encouragement ?

In the story of David recorded in the Bible, God had promised David that he would be king. But Saul, the current king, wants to kill him. But in this difficult period, David will be encouraged by Jonathan, the son of King Saul.

Often our words of encouragement are : "Don't worry, you'll be fine." "We are with you". "Be strong, you'll be okay." Are these encouragements not often very superficial for those who hear them ?

Jonathan encourages David differently : he seeks to strengthen his trust in God. His words were certainly helpful to David when Saul tracked him down and came so close to him that he almost literally got his hands on him to kill him. What will Jonathan do ? He “arose and went to David in the forest. He strengthened his confidence in God, and said to him : Fear not, for the hand of Saul my father will not overtake you" (1 Samuel 23. 16, 17). Keeping your trust in God and His Word changes everything in such a situation.

Today, perhaps you are discouraged, hurt, confused about what you are going through. Perhaps you feel alone, misunderstood, with the feeling of being abandoned, rejected... So we want to encourage you to put your trust in God and in his mighty hand. Let us remember each other that he himself said : "I will not leave you, nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5).
