What he search for (1) - The will of God

Saturday 8 May 2021

(Jesus said) : I am not search to do my will, but that of the Father who sent me. John 5.30

Indeed, I came down from heaven to do not my will, but the will of him who sent me. John 6.38

What he was search for (1) - The will of God

God forbade Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But Satan managed to awaken in Eve the desire to eat it anyway ! And she chose to do her own will, causing her husband to do the same.

Since that moment, humans descended from Adam have a will which is most often opposed to that of God. None of us spontaneously wants to do God's will ! We prefer to do what we want, when and how we want. For some, happiness boils down to this.

Coming to earth, Jesus declares : "I do not search to do my will, but that of the Father who sent me". She is the reason for his coming to earth and the constant goal of his life. Even more, to accomplish this will is for him a delight, a food (Psalm 40.8 ; John 4.34).

Before going to the cross, Jesus engages in a terrible interior struggle. He who is holy and sinless, how can he want to suffer "for sins, the righteous for the unjust" and be forsaken by God (2 Corinthians 5:21 ; 1 Peter 2:22 ;3.18) ? However, he submits his will to that of his Father : "However, let not my will be done, but yours" (Luke 22. 42). This is his top priority, whatever the cost !

He expresses to his disciples the motive for his dedication until death : "However, in this way the world will know that I love the Father and that I act in accordance with the command which the Father has given me" (John 14. 31). It is out of love that Jesus obeys !
