What if you let go of the grain ?
Jesus answered, ... "Truly, truly I say to you, if the grain of wheat which falls into the earth does not die, it remains alone ; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life. will lose it and he who hates his life in this world will converse it for eternal life. " John 12: 24-25
It’s a very telling image. Can you imagine it ? You hold the grain of wheat in your hand. It is yours, it represents your life, you are in control of it, you make the decisions. You can decide what to do with it. You can hold on to it and keep it. But if you keep it, Jesus says it will remain unique. Nothing more will ever come of it.
"We have to let God take control of our grain, which is our life."
How many lonely people are there around us in the world today ... They are alone for this reason alone. They cling to this little grain. They don't want to let go. And so, they own it. He's all theirs, but, oh, so lonely.
What is the other alternative ? You have to let it go, let it fall. Pass it on to God. Let God take control of it. Wanting to see him fall to the ground, lose sight of him and even leave him buried there in the dark.
Perhaps people will trample on him, but God's promise is that new life will spring from him : a life worth living, a life that will no longer be temporal, but eternal.
A prayer for today
Lord, you said in your Word that if I do not take up my cross to follow you, I am not worthy to be your disciple. Lord, I choose to drop this little grain that represents my life in the earth, so that it may die. Even though it is trampled on, I know that with you in me this grain will bear fruit in abundance.
