What is in a gift ?

Indeed, a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us, and sovereignty will rest on his shoulder ; he will be called a wonderful counselor, a mighty God, an Eternal Father, a Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:5

For Christians, the joy of Christmas is not limited to its birth. It is even more built on the triumph of his death and resurrection, which gave meaning to his birth. The mysterious spirit of generosity that possesses us at Christmas is the persistence of Calvary. The fact of the cross illuminates this day and sanctifies it. As we exchange our gifts, let us remember that they symbolize the inexpressible gift of God's love.

I don't think Christians should afford expensive gifts. We must quietly offer small simple gifts that are the expression of our love and devotion to the recipients. These gifts become symbolic of the gift of God's love. How much money could be saved and invested in the Kingdom of God by thousands of Christian families each year if the true meaning of Christmas were observed.

Prayer for the day

Loving God, my heavenly Father, in your gift of Jesus, I see your immeasurable love extending to all of humanity. How I praise you and I adore you !

Billy Graham
