Eternal, what is man, that you know him ? Psalm 144. 3
Behold, I am too little ; what would I reply to you ? Job 39. 37
What is man ? (1)
"Man is only a reed, the weakest in nature ; but he is a thinking reed". This thought by Blaise Pascal reminds us of how small, weak and fragile man is compared to the immense universe that surrounds him. And when the elements of nature are unleashed, when we are faced with difficulties - trials, illness, suffering, death... - where can we find help ?
In the Bible, King David repeatedly expresses the distress he felt before the power of his adversaries ? Job, on the other hand, was affected by a series of unusual ordeals. What is striking is that both turned to God to understand what he wanted to teach them. Job asked God, "What is man that you make so much of him, that you deign to take heed of him, that you visit him every morning, that you test him at all times ?" (Job 7. 17, 18). He strongly felt his smallness in relation to God. But he learned a great lesson during his trials : was he not the object of the attention and care of the great God of heaven ? This is a lesson we must also learn and remember for ourselves. Let us fix our eyes on him, to know him, not only as the almighty Creator, but also as the one who delivers us, the savior God. He wants to speak to us, bring us into a true sharing relationship with him and teach us during our life on earth. Like a Father takes care of his children.
