What price ?

It was not by corruptible things like silver or gold that you were redeemed from the meaningless way of life handed down to you by your forefathers, but by the precious blood of Christ. (1 Peter 1.18, 19)

What price ?

380 million euros : this is the price of the most expensive painting in the world, a painting by Leonardo da Vinci. It is about the “Salvator Mundi” (the Savior of the world), portrait from the front, evoking the presumed face of Jesus. We can ask ourselves the question : What is so valuable about this painting ? Although God did not want to leave an image of Jesus Christ, he allows the most expensive painting in the world to evoke his face. It also allows the world's most expensive printed book to be part of the Bible (a manuscript of the Book of Psalms sold for 12 million euros). The Bible is also the most widely used book in the world. What a contrast to the price at which Jesus was esteemed during his lifetime ! For 30 pieces of silver, a paltry sum (the price of a slave, or the monthly salary of a farm worker), he was betrayed and sold to his enemies who put him to death. At the time, we didn’t give a lot of life !

However, the Bible speaks to us of him as of the Son of God, God himself, who came to offer himself to take our place and thus pay the price for our sins. You cannot imagine a gift of greater value. Did you realize that your life is so valuable in the sight of God ? God gave his Son without expecting anything in return from us, except that we believe him.

And we, at what price do we esteem Jesus ? Is he worth 30 pieces of silver to me as to those who put him to death, or a priceless sum, for he is the Son of God, who died for me ?
