What sin does and does not do

Sin, being consumed, produces death. James 1:15

If we say we have not sinned, we are making God a liar, and his Word is not in us. 1 John 1:10

Sin is any act of disobedience to the revealed will of God. It becomes a state if it lasts. It takes its toll on me, a Christian, when I do it and find myself guilty before God. But what is sin actually doing, or not doing, in my life ?

What sin does :

- It prevents me from enjoying my childhood relationship with my Father

- It makes me lose communion with the Lord, therefore with my brothers

- It can harm my neighbor

- He makes me sad before God

- He provokes discipline (warning or correction) from my Father, because I am his child (Hebrews 12:5-8). By the action of the Holy Spirit, God shows me the gravity of sin and the extent of the damage it causes. His discipline can bear good fruit, if I learn from it (Hebrews 12:11). I don't want to do it again because I love it.

- He will deprive me of the reward promised to him who has been faithful (1 Corinthians 3:14,15)

What sin does not do :

- He doesn't make God angry with me. Christ suffered the wrath of God in my place on the cross.

- He does not cause God to send retribution as punishment. The punishment was brought once and for all by Christ. However, sin can have consequences, for what a man sows he will also reap (Galatians 6:7).

- He doesn't make God reject me. The Lord is doing his priestly service to me. He constantly cares for me so that I can find a living relationship with God.

- He does not make me unworthy of God, for my only dignity is that of Christ who dwells in me (Ephesians 3:17).

What to do ?

Confessing, confessing my fault, abandoning my sin, this is the remedy for walking in communion with God and with other Christians : God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) .
