What would I have done ?

The order is given to destroy all Jews in King Ahasuerus's immense empire. The ordination letters are sealed with the king's ring and are sent by courier (Esther 3:7-15). Mordecai and all the Jews in Susa are in great distress.

Mordecai informs his niece, Queen Esther, of this destructive plan. He asks her to go to the king to plead the cause of the Jews. Esther replies that this is impossible, because anyone who goes to the king without being summoned is put to death, unless he hands him his golden scepter (4.11). Mordecai warns Esther (who had not revealed to the king that she was a Jew) : Do not think in your soul to escape, to the king's house, rather than all the Jews (4:13). The ordeal is tough for the Queen. Several options are available to her :

The leak : "I have other things to do at court." We do not want to face up to our responsibilities ; so we go to other positions, to other work.

Disinterest : “I don't want to disturb my comfort at court”. We want to keep our advantages, our living environment at all costs and not be disturbed by anyone.

Virtue (moral energy) : this is what Esther chooses. Resolute, she declares : I will enter the king's house: I will break the law and, if I must die, I will die (4:16). But courage is not bravado ; it is action with God. Esther will appear alone before the king, but she seeks spiritual support from the Jews. She makes Mordecai say : Go assemble all the Jews who are in Susa and fast for me ! Do not eat or drink anything for three days. I too will respect such a fast with my maids (4.16).

How can we not evoke here the courageous words of Pastor Martin Luther King : "There comes a time when someone has to take a stand for something which is neither safe nor popular, but he has to do it because his conscience is against him. says it's fair ”.

Let us also act courageously with God.
