Where to stop ?

Acts 23.5 - And Paul said : “I did not know, brethren, that this was the high priest ; for it is written : Thou shalt speak no evil of the head of thy people”.

This meditation is meant to warn, it is not there to condemn or castigate anyone. However, we must note that it is becoming more and more common in the Christian world to mock, to insult the authorities of the country. It ranges from caricatures to questionable jokes and sarcasm.

We do not question here the validity of the claim to improve the well-being of the disadvantaged. To stand up in indignation against the injustices of this century is a motivation that should animate more than one child of God.

But the contemptuous attitude towards authority is not a good creative motivation, but rather it is the pride and rebellion that dwells in human nature and that has its source directly in the depraved nature of sin.

The Bible encourages us to pray for the authorities (1 Timothy 2: 1 to 3), it does not specify : only for those who are righteous. Romans 13:1 and 2 tell us that we must submit to these authorities and that resisting them brings condemnation on us. Of course we sometimes have to position ourselves, like Daniel's friends, against them because they oppose the exercise of our faith; however, even in this case, contempt remains condemnable and disapproved of by Him who instituted them.

Beloved, let us not let ourselves be invaded by the spirit of this century, foretaste of the antichrist, who rebels against all forms of authority. On the contrary, let us be examples of respect, bearing the good fruit of self-control.
