Who can know God ?

"Did you not know that the eternal God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, is not weary and tired ? One does not sound his intelligence." Isaiah 40. 28

When I meditate on God who is spirit, I consider his eternal existence, his presence everywhere at the same time, his infinite greatness and wisdom, his limitless power. So this question from Zophar to Job echoes in my mind : "Can you, by probing, discover what is in God ?" (Job 11: 7).

In contemplating the heavens and the earth, I must admit, like Job, that what I see is but a tiny part of the works of the Creator : "These things are the borders of his ways, and how feeble is the murmur that We heard it ! And the thunder of his strength, who can understand it ?" (Job 26:14).

And what about his unconditional love! If I think of God's constant care for his people, I find, like David, that "thou hast multiplied thy God, and thy wondrous works, and thy thoughts toward us ; They can not be arranged before you. If I want to declare them and say them, they are too numerous to tell them" (Psalm 40: 5).

When I think of the omniscience and omnipresence of God in my own life, I have to admit that his perfections exceed my understanding : "Speech is not yet upon my tongue, O LORD ! You know it all. You hold me tight behind and in front, and you put your hand on me ... Knowledge too wonderful for me, so high that I can not reach it !" (Ps 139: 4-6).

Human thoughts are lost in the immensity of the infinite Being. But we always seek to know God better, for nothing raises the soul.

Do not underestimate the knowledge we can have of God although we are limited. Let us not wait for heaven to seek to know the God of eternity revealed in His Word. Our human limitations teach us humility, but faith receives the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and drives us to adoration. God created everything, not to remedy a lack, but to communicate life and happiness to his creatures, and admit them into his glorious presence.

"O depth of wealth and wisdom and knowledge of God ! His judgments are unfathomable and his ways indiscernible !" (Romans 11:33).
