Who do you say I am ?

"Who are they saying that I am the Son of man ? And they said : Some say, John the Baptist ; Others : Elijah ; Others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. And he said to them : "And you, who do you say I am ?" Matthew 16: 13-15

Seeing Jesus walking on earth, many of his contemporaries wondered who he actually was. By his attitude, his words, his actions he was so different from those he met. The disciples themselves, after seeing Jesus calm the tempest which terrified them, said among themselves, "Who is this, that the wind and the sea may obey him ?" (Mark 4:41).

Today, what is the appreciation of the man on the street about the person of Jesus ? For some, it is perhaps only this character of plaster of Christmas : he is put in the manger near Christmas, it is called "the little Jesus" ; Then we put him in a box all the rest of the year without thinking of him any more. For many other people, Jesus is a man of great morality, having led a remarkable life, the founder of the Christian religion to which the present civilization owes much. For others still, a prophet or even inversely an impostor. Today, the range of answers to the question Jesus once asked is very broad.

And for the Christian, what is his appreciation of the person of Jesus ? The answer is the same as that formerly made by Peter : "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). But he can go farther than Peter, for he knows Jesus as the Savior who left his life for him on the cross in order to acquire eternal happiness in heaven ; He is the one who manifests his love at any moment of the day.

The question of Jesus challenges us today : the answer we give him has a certain impact on our daily life. "All her person is desirable" (Cant. 5:16), such is the answer given by the Beloved to whom one asked what his Beloved had more than the others.

What is it really for each of us ?
