Who is truly free ?

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. So stand firm. Galatians 5.1

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Who is truly free ?

Bernard Palissy, renowned Renaissance ceramist, was imprisoned by Parliament because of his faith. King Henry II wanted to preserve the life of this man, because he was the only one capable of making magnificent vases. But neither the threats nor the promises had any effect on the prisoner, who absolutely refused to renounce his faith. The king himself went to the prison to demand that he retract.

- If you don't, added the king, I will be obliged to sentence you to death myself.

- Majesty, answered Palissy, do I hear the King of France say : I will be obliged to do something ? I am only a poor artist, one of the humblest subjects of your Majesty. And I am now a prisoner. However, no power in the whole world could force me to act against my conscience. You are one of the most powerful rulers on earth, and yet you talk about being forced to do something. Your Majesty, which of us is really free ?

Man wants to be free, and he imagines that he is. However, his freedom is very limited, whatever the authority with which he is invested. If I have become a slave to my impulses, lusts, and perhaps addictions, the Bible tells me that Jesus Christ has the power to deliver me. If I trust him, his death on the cross frees me from all ties. "If therefore the Son (of God) frees you, you will really be free" (John 8:36).
