In a word, he made a stormy wind blow which lifted the waves of the sea. They were ascending to the sky, they were descending into the abyss, they were anguished in the face of danger. Psalm 107. 25, 26
So he (Jesus) got up, threatened the winds of the lake and there was great calm. Matthew 8. 26
Wind and waves - Proposed reading : Mark 6. 45-52
They were twelve men in a boat, around three in the morning, rowing painfully. They struggled through the night, trying to reach shore despite the strong waves and headwinds. They had had a very busy day and now, overwhelmed with fatigue, they had to struggle even more to stay the course and get through that stormy night.
Why did the Lord allow this situation ? He even made them get into the boat and cross the lake without waiting for him. Didn't he know this storm was coming? Could he not have ordered that this great wind not blow ? They were exhausted; why not stop and go back to where they came from ? Anyway, the absent Master was doing nothing to help them...
Similar thoughts come to mind when the storm blows. Mourning, illness, academic or professional failures, many difficulties seem insurmountable to us. So let's read the end of the story : "Then he (Jesus) got into the boat and the wind died". Let us not forget that God prepared the end of the trial before it began and that he still wants the good of his children. Should we not then rely with confidence on this certainty, even if we do not immediately grasp the purpose it pursues ?
