You are the salt of the earth !

“You are the salt of the earth...You are the light of the world...” Matthew 5. 13-14

Jesus throws us the same challenge as His disciples : do the people around us, our co-workers, our neighbors, even our friends recognize that we are different from others ? Do our behavior, our daily habits bring a new flavor to their lives ? Do they notice a smell floating around us that either attracts them to us or on the contrary makes them uncomfortable ? Salt has several qualities, but the most important is to give flavor to foods that are a little bland. Does our conversation show that we know Jesus as our Lord and that we cannot accept certain things that would displease Him ? Or do you prefer to blend in with the crowd to please everyone ? Jesus added : “You are the light of the world”. The light illuminates and guides, but also opposes the darkness where sin reigns. Is your life a light that enriches, illuminates, warms the lives of others, or have you placed your light under such a dense blanket that no one can guess it ? Here is how Eugene Peterson paraphrased this text : “You are the seasoning capable of bringing out all the flavors of God’s creation. If you lose your salinity, how can others taste the holiness of God ? Or, to put it in a different way : you are the light of the world with the mission to bring out the magnificent divine colors in this world. God is not a secret that you must keep well! On the contrary, let us proclaim Him loud and clear, let us expose Him as high as a city on top of a hill... I have placed you there, on a hill, or on a pedestal so that you may shine ! So shine ! Open the doors of your homes, be generous with your life ! By opening wide the doors of your life to others, you will encourage them to open their hearts to God !” (Matthew 5. 13-16). Will we rise to the challenge ?
