You do not need to understand now...
“What I am doing you do not know now, but you will understand later.” John 13. 7
In a few words Jesus touches on a reality that we know as well as His early disciples : too often we do not understand what God is doing or about to do ! Are we not also inclined to ask Him "why ?" Truly we don't need to know. To walk in faith is to trust Him even when His ways seem incomprehensible to us ! During this last meal with His disciples Jesus behaved in a very strange way : He took off a good part of His clothes, wrapped himself around the waist with a towel, before kneeling to wash their feet. This gesture seemed strange to them, but above all inappropriate : how could He, the Lord, stoop to wash their feet ? Peter in particular was puzzled, but he found himself in good company : think of Abraham to whom God, after having kept His promise to give him a son, asks to be sacrificed on an altar, or Joseph reflecting on the years wasted deep down. an Egyptian prison, or King Jehoshaphat who must send a group of musicians and singers to advance his army just before the battle (2 Chronicles 20)... The examples, in fact, cover almost all believers in the past who did not immediately understand why God was acting this way in their lives. Some have never understood it here on earth. This is what Paul calls : "walk by faith and not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5.7). We don't need to know everything, but why ? In some cases God considers that this is not the right time to reveal to us the reason for His actions. Sometimes we could not handle this knowledge, for His ways are so much higher than ours (Isaiah 55.8-9). We have only to trust Him, for did He not say : "I will teach you, and show you the way you should go" (Psalm 32:8) ?
