Your enemy is clever

Be sober, stay vigilant : your opponent, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5.8

After becoming military editor of Encyclopedia Britannica, author B. H. Liddell Hart, who was also an officer in the British Army, was forced to study the history of wars. His studies revealed the importance of what he called the "indirect approach".

He discovered that through the ages there were seldom successful results in wars without the approach being so indirect that he found the opponent unprepared to face it. Hart found that, consistently, victories were won by armies that masked their true intentions, surprised their enemies, and attacked them when they were unprepared.

"Be on guard against your opponent's attacks."

Likewise, many Christians experience failure in their lives because they are not prepared for spiritual warfare. They don't realize that the devil is shrewd and deceitful. He will not warn of the attack but will seek to confuse us with mixed messages. He will prey on our weaknesses, and will creep into us when we are not ready. Instead of attacking us directly or approaching us head-on, it may attack our family or friends, our emotions, our health, or our finances.

Be on guard against your opponent's attacks. Like a lion, he seeks prey to devour. As Paul states (Ephesians 6), make sure you have the shield of strong faith. Live your life in truth and have the "breastplate of righteousness", speaking and doing what is right. Arm yourself with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and saturate your life with prayer.

So, be careful today ! And be prepared for attacks. They will certainly happen.

A prayer for today

Father, help me be ready for spiritual warfare. Open my mind and my heart so that I am sensitive to the attacks of the enemy. Help me to be strong in the Spirit and armed with your Word. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
