"Death and life are in the power of language ; you will have to satisfy yourself with the fruits your language will have produced." Proverbs 18:21
I started smoking at the age of nine and continued for many years. I loved it! So the day I decided to stop it was extremely difficult for me.
If you change the way you speak, your heart will change as well. Should your heart change? Before I got there, I had to understand that I was sinking into failure with my negative statements. I finally realized that the defeatist remarks I made about me were responsible for my failure. For a very long time, I said, "I know I can never quit smoking, and I'm sure I will end up gaining weight."
Fortunately, God helped me see that if I did not change my words, I could not do it. Little by little, he placed in me the desire to utter words which expressed the assurance of success and not the certainty of failure. I began to utter words like "I can not stand smoking anymore, cigarettes smell bad, and they're expensive too, I do not smoke !"
At first, I felt stupid, because I always smoked. But after about a week I realized that I now had the grace of God to stop me.
The word confess means "to say the same thing as". Jesus can only act if our words are in accord with His Word. It is therefore essential that we learn to proclaim Scripture, instead of speaking words based on our feelings, or what others say about us.
How do you talk when you are in difficult times ? Or when you do not get what you want ?
If you change the way you speak, your heart will change as well. Should your heart change ? This is the case for each of us. We can all grow in our relationship with God. And to progress, we must speak the same language as him.
In practice, this translates into the following :
- Bless all that you can bless. The Bible affirms that language has the power to bless or curse James 3.8-10
- Be grateful and say so ! Psalms 100.4 Do not just think that you appreciate a person, tell him !
- Know how to encourage. Make the effort to give a word of encouragement to someone every day.
- Tell the truth.
- Proclaim the Word of God. Memorize and recite verses that evoke aspects of your character that you would like to see changed or overcome - anger, refusal to forgive, feelings of insecurity ...
- Do not talk too much. Be quick to listen and slow to speak.
An action for today
God wants you to ask him for his help in using your language wisely. Decide today to abandon the negative words that plunge you into failure, then proclaim God's promises to you. Your life will be transformed !
