Abigail (1)

This man's name was Nabal and his wife was called Abigail. She was a woman full of good sense and very beautiful, while her husband was harsh and mean in the way he acted. 1 Samuel 25:3

The important event in the life of this woman of faith comes when David is persecuted by Saul who hunts him through the deserts and mountains of Palestine. She is married to a man, Nabal, who embodies the characters of the world we still live in today.

- A harsh world and wicked in its actions (v.3). The more we advance into the last days, the more relentless the world is to people who do not know how to "defend themselves", the more violence and corruption reign in various forms from the top to the bottom of the social ladder.

- A selfish world where each one clings to what he has, like Nabal who speaks of my bread, my water and my meat that I killed for my shearers (v.11).

- A "mad or impious" world (this is the meaning of the name of Nabal) which denies the existence of God and rejects his authority : The fool said in his heart: there is no God (Psalm 14:1).

- A world without restraint, like Nabal when he was drunk to the limit : the world benefits to the maximum and without recognition of the benefits that God provides to men for their subsistence.

Abigail cannot help but live with this man. Likewise, believers are to live in this world though not (John 17:14,15), and keep themselves clean from the world (James 1:27). The rest of the story shows that Abigail does not limit herself to profiting from her husband's wealth : she displays virtues which undoubtedly stem from an interior personal life not influenced by the atmosphere that Nabal certainly made to reign in his house.

The woman had common sense. Seeking the will of God is common sense (the opposite of madness) for every man :

- an unconverted obeys God's command to repent and believe in Jesus (Acts 17:30).
