About our "why ?"

"At the same time there were people who told him of the affair of the Galileans, of whom Pilate had mixed blood with their sacrifices. Jesus replied : "Do you think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the Galileans for having suffered in such a way ?" Luke 13: 1, 2

It is doubtless to arouse on Jesus' part a reaction of indignation that it is reported to him the massacre of Galileans. Responding in advance to the objections that might have been made to him by putting forward the cruelty of the governor, the Lord cites another example in which the wickedness of man has nothing to do with it : "These eighteen upon whom fell the tower at Siloe, and that she slew, do you think they were more guilty than all the inhabitants of Jerusalem ? No, I tell you" (Luke 13: 4). Jesus shows that a catastrophe is not automatically associated with a divine punishment.

The search for meaning in negative events is very current and draws a lot of ink as natural disasters, accidents and violence leave everyone distressed and anguished.

In his answer, Jesus questions the idea that those who are spared by a disaster should be because of their moral superiority over the victims. He uses the collapse of the Tower of Siloé, perhaps a construction site accident, to renew his warnings : "If you do not repent, you will all perish alike" (Luke 13: 5).

Today, this narrative draws our attention to the essential, that is to say, the response of every man to the grace of God who, by means of faith in Jesus Christ, offers salvation to the one who repents. Death reaches each in a more or less short time ; what matters then is repentance to God, which alone gives him access to eternal life.

Thus Jesus gives no explanation for so many reasons. Why are men remaining, and how many today are they who would like to question God about the existence of evil and suffering on earth ? No one has an answer, no more philosophers than Christians. In the face of such inexplicable mysteries, the apostle Paul exhorts us to pray : "In every circumstance, expose your petitions to God by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving ; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will keep your hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus" (Phil 4: 6,7).
