Discover Jesus

"I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning." 1 John 2:13

Contrary to what one might think, it took some time after Jesus ascended into heaven so that the apostles understood who was really the one who had revealed themselves to them as a man - but a man apart. They were, of course, guided by the Holy Spirit whose purpose was to communicate to them what was of Christ (John 16:14). But the chronology of their writings shows that this awareness was gradually made, their "Christology" (their doctrine on the person of Christ) refined over time.

Paul did not rub shoulders with Jesus as man. After his vision on the way to Damascus, he began his service by demonstrating from the Old Testament that Jesus was the Christ ; But it is necessary to await his last epistles to find the quintessence of his meditation on the person of Christ, and especially on his divinity:

- Colossians 1: 15-20 : He affirms the supremacy of the Son as Firstborn.

Philippians 2: 5-11 : He meditates on the annihilation and glorification of the eternal Son.

- 1 Timothy 3. 16 : He exalts God manifested in the flesh.

Of the four evangelists, it is also John (probably writing 20 or 30 years after the other evangelists and at least 10 years after Paul), who most develops reflection on the nature of Jesus : the prologue of his gospel is a summary Rich and concise of the vision he had of the divinity of Jesus, the Word made flesh.

The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews is a second-generation Christian who has received the testimony of the apostles (Heb. 2: 3) and has so deeply meditated that he draws a unique portrait of Jesus - Son, priest And sacrifice.

A young believer in the faith will spontaneously pray "the Lord Jesus" and he will be touched by the stories of life and the death of the Savior. But it takes a whole Christian life to discover (and still very partially !) Who is truly Jesus, the one, the incomparable. The sign of maturity, according to John, is then to know "who is from the beginning".

Let us therefore seek each day to grow in the discovery of Jesus, to worship and imitate Him ever better.
