Do you know your real identity? (2)
“Consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:11
If Jesus did indeed die a physical and cruel death on the cross of Golgotha, we only “die” a spiritual death when Christ enters our life. To feel this “death” may seem strange and unreal. Yet God sees us as holy and spotless, since our sins have been taken off our shoulders by the work of Christ. He knows our true identity better than we do and He wants us to leave this graveyard where our old nature was buried, to live as a child of God and son/daughter of a king. Some Christians readily say “I am just a sinner saved by grace”. The trouble is, such a statement does not correspond to reality. God no longer considers us sinners once His grace has saved us. It would be more correct to say : "I was certainly a sinner who was saved by divine grace, but now I am part of another family, that of God !" Even if you commit sins, even if you are attracted to various addictions, such as alcohol or pornography, nevertheless you must see yourself as a child of God who still struggles with attractions of the flesh, but your faults or your falls don't determine who you are. Your true identity is not affected. Remember that the Christian life is, for us, an impossibility to live here on earth. Only the power of Christ who lives in us can achieve the impossible ! Paul adds another incredible truth : “We have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). Did you understand it correctly ? We now have the capacity to think according to His thoughts ! This includes the emotions, the desires, the attitudes that were those of Christ when He lived here on earth. And what is more, our true identity opens us a new homeland : by faith we are already citizens of the heavens where we will one day join our Savior. Because He lives in us !
