Doubt is not a sin (2)

"Have mercy... on those who doubt." Jude 1.22

It's too easy to criticize Thomas for being beset with doubts, especially when you consider how many times we succumb to our own doubts ! Thomas was absent the day Jesus first appeared to his disciples after His resurrection. Their testimony was not enough for him, he wanted to experience the presence of the Risen Christ himself. And this experience was granted to him ! Jesus understands that if we ask Him an honest question, without ulterior motive, it does not mean that we are skeptical, it simply means that we are seeking the truth ! Listen to the rest : “A week later, Jesus disciples were again gathered in the house and Thomas was with them... Jesus came and, standing among them, said to them : Peace be with you !” Then He said to Thomas : “Put your finger here and look at My hands, put your hand out and put it in My side. Stop doubting and believe !” Thomas answered Him : “My Lord and my God !” (John 20. 26-28). Here are two important lessons for us today :

1- honest doubt can lead to a more intimate relationship with Jesus. The testimony of others cannot sustain you forever ; a day will come when you will have to experience the presence of the Lord yourself. And that is always possible. Thomas began by doubting Jesus but ended up suffering martyrdom for his Lord !

2- an honest doubt can evolve into an unmatched level of confidence. When everything collapses around you, when the suffering seems unbearable, when incomprehensible events occur in your life, a procession of doubts invades your mind, which you cannot and must not suppress. On the contrary, accept them. These hours of doubts will become hours of learning that will push you into the arms of God in search of answers and will establish new relationships of unparalleled trust between you !
