From "why ?" revelators

"There were some of the scribes sitting there, reasoning in their hearts : Why does this man speak thus ? He blasphemes. Who can forgive sins, if not one, God ? Immediately Jesus, knowing ... that they reasoned thus in themselves, said to them : Why do you hold these reasonings in your hearts ?" Read Mark 2. 1-12

This chapter of Mark is rich in why (v. 6, 8, 16, 18, 24) ; the first two attract attention, as they reveal two diametrically opposed states of mind.

Some scribes mingled with the crowds that came to the house where Jesus dwells. They are probably curious to see the man who recently delivered a man of unclean spirit. They know that a demon proclaimed him "Holy of God". But they are not ready to recognize him as the Messiah, the messenger of God. When they hear the Lord say to the paralyzed : "Your sins are forgiven," they jump. It goes far beyond Jesus' astonishing authority over evil spirits. Only God has the power to forgive sins. This Jesus claims to be God. According to the law, it is blasphemy ! It's unimaginable for the scribes. That he heals is good ; but why does he take this provocative, insane posture ? That which they dare not to express and keep "in their hearts" is the occasion for the Lord to give them and the assembled crowd a triple proof of his divinity.

- the reason why he addresses them reveals to them that he knows all their thoughts, even the most secret ones. This is proof that he is God (Ps 94. 11, Jer 17. 17) ;

- by commanding the paralyzed to rise and walk, he proves that he has a divine power ;

-if he has the divine power to do this miracle, he also has the divine authority to forgive sins, he is therefore God.

To those who justifiably justify their refusal to accept the salvation of Jesus, the Son of God, he still answers today : "You, why do you not believe me ?" (John 8. 46). But to "those who believe in his name," not only "he has the power to forgive sins," but he gives them "the right to be children of God." "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved" (John 1.12, Act 16. 31).
