"... You have been redeemed from the empty way of life that you have inherited from your fathers" (1 Peter 1:18).

We have all received from our ancestors, a set of characteristics which are included in our genes. These special characters can be found in our physical appearance as in our soul. They constitute our personality, which recognizes both physically as psychologically. This is what the apostle Peter expressed in this text. Here, he talks about the psychological heritage, cultural, educational, emotional, our fathers have left us.

The proverb, conveyed by the popular wisdom : "Like father like son", reflects this reality. Our soul has the strengths or weaknesses of the soul of our parents. There in the Greek text the notion of "atavism". Our soul is marked by traits of our parents, grandparents, great grandparents ... All that heredity may influence, more or less strong, what we are psychologically ; However, all the ills of the soul can not be reduced to this legacy, as we shall see.

How to overcome these atavistic involved, in part, to our inner wounds ? The answer lies in the context of what Peter said : "You have been redeemed from the empty way of life inherited from your fathers, with the precious blood of Christ ... have purified your souls in obeying the truth ..." (1 Peter 1.18 / 22). This negative legacy, which our souls are more or less injured, was bought by the sacrifice of Christ. Our sick and wounded souls are washed, cleaned, purified by the precious blood of Jesus. There is therefore a real possibility of spiritual triumph of our atavism, from our heredity, through the work of the cross.

We are not condemned to hang psychological legacy that keeps the wounds of the soul, we can be liberated by our faith in the grace that is in Christ. If our father or mother were bitter, angry, depressed, dragging behind them a multitude of inner wounds, we are not obliged to repeat the same patterns of life. We have the ability to be regenerated (change genes) : "You have been born again ... through the living and enduring word of God" (1 Peter 1:23).

My prayer on this day :

Lord, I believe that when you died on the cross, you're responsible for all atavism that could disrupt my soul. You give me the victory on the negative aspects of this legacy. You heal my soul, my fears, my anxieties, my fears, any devaluation of myself. Amen !
