"For he is our peace, who both did and did that which toppled the wall of separation, enmity ..." (Ephesians 2:14).



One year after the terrible genocide that shook Rwanda in 1994, I had to preach in the great stadium in Kigali, on the theme of reconciliation. Hutu and Tutsi had built a wall of separation between them, so my message is articulated around these verses of Paul to the Ephesians.

Builders of walls, fences trainers have always existed. To protect the Mongols, the Chinese built the Great Wall. During the long conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland, brick walls separated the two communities. Today, concrete walls separating the Jewish and Palestinian communities in the West Bank ... But these walls are they sufficient to guarantee peace ? These walls of separation, while serving to ensure safety, do not they help to maintain a climate of enmity ?

Fortunately, there are also walls of renverseurs, bridge builders. The apartheid wall was only digging a deeper and deeper gap between blacks and whites in South Africa. The separation, segregation, was away more and more prospects for peace in this nation. But one day, the president Frederick de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, decide to topple that wall and to build a bridge between the two communities. As the civil war could destroy this nation, overthrowing the separation wall the two men were peacemakers.
Similarly, two Irish women, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan, organized protest marches in the streets of Belfast, attended by thousands of Catholic and Protestant families. They decided to build bridges, and so down the walls of separation.

Jesus Christ, himself, came to our world to overthrow the wall of separation between men and God. It also breaks down barriers that separate people between them. Jesus invites us, in our turn, to be bridge builders, to be peacemakers !
The Nobel Peace Prize was given to the peacemakers, those who tried to overthrow the walls and build bridges. But God wants to give you a much greater reward, he wants you to be declared son of God because you have been peacemakers ! (Matthew 5.9).

My decision today :

Lord, today I decided to work to build bridges and to overthrow the walls of separation. I want to be a peacemaker in the example of Jesus. Amen !
