"Ye shall be holy unto me, for I the Lord are holy" (Leviticus 20:26).
By setting apart the people of Israel, God wished to show to all nations what his missionary mission was to all men. The book of Leviticus, however off-putting, shows us that the plan of salvation encompasses the totality of human needs.
With Moses as spiritual and political leader, God extracts the descendants of Abraham from slavery and nomadism to make him a holy, organized and healthy people. For this he gives him the ingenious laws contained in Leviticus. This book reflects the will and mission of God to bring the people of Israel to physical health and spiritual holiness so that they may witness before all nations their final plan for all peoples. This is why in this book we find guidelines concerning all aspects of life :
Nutrition, drinking water, public health ; Agronomy, animal husbandry ; Justice, the defense of human rights (of the child, the girl, the woman, the handicapped, immigrants, workers, old people, victims, defendants) ; Financial activities, social security, labor law, commercial law, land and real estate law, urban and rural law ; The rhythm of life (calendar, holidays, weekly break, commemorations, collective memory, community festivals) ; Family life, intimate relationships, community organization, national ; The organization of worship, offerings, priests, sanctuary, instruments, appointments ... and all that contributes to the spiritual and physical health of a whole community.
Even if the testimony of Israel has been diminished and limited because of its recurring idolatry and sin (as is the case with all men), some Israelites witnessed God's mission to the nations. They became political leaders like Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Esther, Nehemiah, Daniel, or influenced kings such as Cyrus, Nebuchadnezzar, the Prince of Nineveh ... And even if all their interlocutors did not walk in the ways of God, Some accepting the message saw God's blessing on their country.
Throughout the history of mankind and in all biblical accounts from Genesis to the Apocalypse we find God's continuous search for "sons" and "daughters" who, in a real Communion of love woven freely with him, will participate actively in his actions to fulfill his global mission : To save all men and all man, in his physical, emotional, spiritual, material and social needs ... Understand this, Is to understand the heart of God and the overall purpose of his mission.
My prayer on this day :
Lord, I want to be with you in your mission, to help my neighbor in all his needs, so that he may discover your salvation. Amen !
