"I make no account of my life ... provided that I fulfill ... the ministry ... to preach the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24).

 

Paul sees the announcement of the good news of God's grace as a top priority. He is willing to pay with his own life, so that this goal is achieved. A few years later, when he saw that the believers of Galatia had departed from this gospel, he expressed his astonishment : "I am astonished that you turn away so quickly from the one who called you by the grace of Christ, to pass on to another gospel "(Galatians 1: 6). There is therefore the gospel of grace and other gospels.

Among these other gospels there is the gospel of prosperity, announcing pleasant things (2 Timothy 4: 5). The day will come, says Paul, where people will turn away from the gospel of grace, for they will want to hear pleasant things. This day is already here, with those who preach this gospel announcing prosperity, material success, assured well-being, without repentance. This gospel turns its back on the foundation of the message of grace which rests on the preaching of the cross, which leads to repentance.

There is also that of works and merits, in which man seeks to justify himself. But grace can only work if we recognize ourselves as sinners.
One day a prince went to meet the prisoners in the largest prison in the kingdom. He asked everyone why he was there ? Some said it was because of such ; Others suffered injustice and that it was a miscarriage of justice ... Finally, there was only one prisoner who fully assumed his responsibility by saying that he was guilty and that he deserved this condemnation. Then the prince ordered that this one guilty party be separated from all these innocent people because he risked contaminating them all. He was taken out of his cell and the prince said to him : "Since you are guilty, I thank you."
Grace is for those who, conscious of their sins, consider with humility the price paid by Jesus to the cross.

Some contrast the message of grace with that of the cross. The two go together. There is no grace where the cross is not working. The gospel of grace can not be separated from the message of the cross.
Those who make this mistake are because they confuse the message of the cross with that of works, merits, personal efforts, penances, religious legalism, as the Galatians did.

A prayer for this day :

Lord, help me to remain firmly attached to this gospel of grace, which is neither the gospel of ease, nor that of personal merits, but that of "everything is accomplished" by Jesus on the cross. Amen !
