"Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil soup ... Esau despised the birthright" (Genesis 25:34).

 

Everyone who reads the Bible knows this story well. We are surprised by the attitude of Esau ; He despises a right which assures him a great material and spiritual blessing. He sold off his inheritance for a dish of lentils. He was exhausted after a hard day's hunting, and therefore unable to judge the value of things! What folly do we say ! But do we ever do the same ? Do we really appreciate the favor of God? Do we not sometimes have the temptation to leave aside the rich blessings of the Lord, for some futile pleasures ? Esau forgets to think long term.

Have we not also received a wonderful inheritance in Christ ? (Ephesians 1:11). Do we really appreciate it ? Are we not tempted to leave aside this glorious legacy for some 'lentils' ? There are various ways of despising the graces of God. I refer to the very insidious rejection of those who prefer their religious forms to the reality of a life marked by the disinterested love of others. Remember the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10.30 / 37). Do you prefer the lenses of religious honor, or the inheritance that God reserves for those who forget themselves to bless the wounded of life ?

In addition to this well-known passage in the book of Genesis, where mention is made of lentils, we find them cited in three other texts. In 2 Samuel 17: 28-29, we see that they were part of the road supplies for the soldiers of David. They constituted one of the basic foodstuffs of the people ; Therefore, to protect one of these fields of lentils, one of David's heroes stood up against the Philistines who terrified the people (2 Samuel 23: 11-12).
Lentils could also be used in making bread, as this passage emphasizes : "Take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelled ; Put them in a container ; Thou shalt make bread thereof (Ezekiel 4: 9).

Lentils, rich in iron and vegetable proteins, constitute one of the substances necessary for food. Even if they are not as pleasant to eat as a candy, they have an important nutritional value. In this they invite us to appreciate people, not according to their appearance or attractiveness, but according to the riches hidden in their hearts. He is a person of modest appearance, but so rewarding and edifying. Let us appreciate and preserve the richness of these constructive relationships.

Lord, I pledge myself not to despise your inheritance for futility, and I also pledge myself not to judge according to appearance but according to the hidden riches of the heart.
