Moses said to the Lord :... "Now I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, let me know thy way, and I will know thee, that I may find grace in thine eyes ; And consider that this nation is thy people. And the LORD said, My face shall go, and I will give you rest. And Moses said to him : "If your face does not come, do not make us come up from here ; For what shall I know that I have found grace in thine eyes, I and thy people ? Will it not be that you will walk with us ? "Exodus 33: 12-16
The people of Israel make a god in the form of a golden calf ; Yet the first of the Ten Commandments commanded him to have no other gods but the Lord. God can not tolerate this violation of the Law and tell Moses that he will destroy the people (Exodus 32:10). Immediately Moses interceded; The Lord hears, the people will not be destroyed : the Lord will be gracious (v.14).
God entrusts to Moses the charge of bringing the people into the country promised to the patriarchs, while declaring that he would not go with them. How could he endure such a disobedient people (Exodus 33: 3) ? Moses understands that the presence of the Lord is indispensable ; He therefore intercedes a second time so that God accompanies the people. Wonder of his grace, God accepts to remain in the midst of a rebellious people (v.14). He will sit in the darkness of the most holy place where the ark is.
This presence is unconditional. Luckily ! For the complaints of the people and their faults will often be renewed throughout his journey in the desert, and then at his entrance into Canaan.
The Lord Jesus teaches his disciples that he is present in the midst of them, when they come together for him, in his name, that is, under his authority (Matthew 18:20). He does not put any condition on it, any more than it imposes on the presence of the Holy Spirit in every believer. Luckily ! For what are the believers whose behavior is always at the level of the holiness of God ?
It is the desire of the Risen One to be in the midst of his own (Luke 24:36 ; John 20: 19-26). And because it is so, let us behave in a manner worthy of him !
