"If anyone scandalized one of these little ones ... it would be better ... to be thrown to the bottom of the sea" (Matthew 18: 6).
Jesus is not tender with those who scandalize the children ! The dictionary Larousse gives the following definition of the verb scandalize : "To arouse indignation by a behavior, a character, contrary to morality".
Some people may have experienced a variety of traumas, assaults, or even abuse during their childhood, and that completely upset their souls. They keep deep wounds as a result of these tragedies. Abuse of confidence, physical abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse, abuse of power or even spiritual abuse, children can retain painful memories. Sometimes these injuries occur within the family, a place where the child should normally be safe, or in communities that are closed to destructuring practices.
Mention should also be made of injuries due to parents' neglect, depriving the child of affection, warmth, care, tenderness ... According to recent statistics, one child in four has suffered either of these Forms of abuse ! Without going into the detail of each of these wounds, (there are many specialized journals on this subject), let us consider in the light of the Word of God what is the resource that God offers us to heal from these wounds. Perhaps you will be surprised, that I write resource to the singular. Would there be only one resource ? Certainly there can be various psychological aids, but if we place ourselves on the ground of Christian experience, there can be no inner healing without a supernatural and personal encounter with Jesus.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of God is for those who are like them" (Mark 10:34). He reminds us that this encounter with him is the first step towards inner healing.
The wounds in the soul of a child abused, abused, abused ... are generating feelings of anger, contempt and withdrawal, guilt, rejection, bitterness, fear ... These wounds lead to " Self-pity, depression, anguish, violence, devaluation of one's own self or contempt for others.
Advice for this day :
If, being an adult, you are dragging such wounds, hear Jesus telling you, "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). It is time for you to say, "Lord, come to heal me from all these abuses, these wounds, which have broken me emotionally, and have even made me doubt you." Amen !
