To give joyously is quickly read and quickly forgotten, for it touches a very sensitive chord in me : that of the instinct of possession ; And this carries a risk : that of amputating my reserves.
Yet I read well : "God loves him that giveth joyfully" (2 Cor 9: 7). Giving passes yet, but joyfully, without constraint, it is something that really is not natural to me.
Indeed, in our world, everything is bought, everything is sold, nothing is given. It is a world in which everyone desires to receive more and to accumulate or spend for his own satisfaction, and where selfishness triumphs with its train of injustice and resentment. Should I be astonished when I see how painful it is sometimes to give, and often difficult to do it joyfully ?
This is an area where the exhortation applies : "Be transformed by the renewal of your understanding" (Rom 12: 2). My old way of looking must change, the order of my priorities too. The Lord helps me to change if I take it to heart to obey His Word. And this gradually becomes a reality for me: it is more fortunate to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
When I learn to give, I turn my gaze away from myself to ask the needs of my neighbor and I rejoice in the approval of my Master who gave his life for me. If he sees in me sadness or regret in giving, my gift no longer has any value for him.
The context of these verses shows that they concern our material goods, but their scope can be extended to everything we possess, or rather to everything entrusted to us : our time, our affection, our sympathy, our knowledge of the Lord And of His Word ... And do not believe that we are impoverished by doing so ! By thus going against the habits of the world, but with a good heart, we are happy because we walk in the path of the will of the Lord. And God also gives us a hundredfold what we give out of love for him and for others.
