"His master said unto him, Behold, good and faithful servant ; Thou hast been faithful in little things, I will confide thee very much ; Enter into the joy of thy master "(Matthew 25:21 and 23).

 

In Matthew 25, Jesus gives various teachings concerning the coming judgment, and uses some illustrations, including the so-called parable of talents (Matthew 25: 14-30). What is stressed, in a very positive way by Jesus, is the fidelity of the first two servants. It is not their success that is put forward, but their loyalty.

Mother Teresa understood this spiritual law well since she said : "I do not pray for success but for fidelity." Ultimately, when we have to meet our Creator, it is not our successes that will be judged, but our fidelity, and even more, our fidelity in small things, as this parable reminds us.

To succeed in life is not necessarily to obtain immense success, but to remain faithful to him who has granted us his grace is to remain faithful to his grace, to his love, to his teaching.

Speaking of this access to the kingdom of heaven, Jesus indicates that it is not those who will have success that will enter, but those who will have maintained an intimate relationship with him, faithful love : "Those who say to me : Lord, Lord ! Not all shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied by thy name ? Have we not cast out demons by your name ? And have we not done many miracles by your name ? Then I will openly say to them, "I never knew you, depart from me, you who commit iniquity" (Matthew 7:21, 23). We can not be clearer ! The success of such an evangelist, such a prophet, or such a churchman, can not be a proof of success in the eyes of God. What God is going to judge is the fidelity of every believer and not his miracles.

The verb to know, which is used here : "I never knew you," speaks to us of a knowledge due to intimacy, to communion, in a faithful relationship.
Ultimate success, entry into the kingdom will be granted, not according to our successes, our works, our exploits, but according to our fidelity to the one who first loved us, according to our fidelity to follow him.

Advice for this day :

Do as Mother Teresa do not pray for success, but pray that your fidelity to the Lord, and he alone, will be maintained, whatever the circumstances of life by which you pass.
