"Whoever is in milk does not have the experience of the word of righteousness ; For he is a child "(Hebrews 5:13).
In the natural world, with the exception of a few rare cases of serious illness, most babies grow up to become adults. Who says adults does not mean responsible men or women ; Indeed, some adults remain teenagers for life! In the spiritual realm, it is also so, some remain babies for life. Identifying causes means giving oneself the means to develop antidotes.
The causes can be multiple, but in fact they divide into two large families. There are personal causes and external causes.
Indeed, in a personal capacity, we can indulge, either by laziness or by religious habit, to remain in a position of 'spiritual baby'. The author emphasizes this laziness when he speaks in contrast, in verse 14, of those who become men made by "a judgment exercised by custom. Let us emphasize the word used by the author of this epistle: 'exercised'. This word emphasizes the importance of exercise. Exiting spiritual infantilism requires exercise. Let us be clear, there is no question here of efforts to gain or merit some favors from God. Indeed, everything is acquired by Christ, and is offered to us by the grace of God.
What exercises can help us grow the grace of God in our lives ?
Here are some avenues : "Blessed is the man who exercises mercy" (Psalm 112: 5). The exercise of mercy is a growth factor.
"Let him who has the gift of prophecy exercise it according to the analogy of faith" (Romans 12: 6). The exercise of charisms is presented as another factor of growth.
"Exercise yourself to piety" (1 Timothy 4: 8).
These are the exercises that are of such a nature as to make us grow: Exercising mercy, exercising the gifts of the Spirit wisely, practicing piety.
With regard to external causes, there are sometimes the attitude of certain spiritual leaders who tend to regard themselves as a priestly body of initiates, in the face of faithful who need to be continually taken care of. It is infantilization, the believers know nothing to do without the blessing of an ecclesiastical official.
Now Christ makes all those who believe in him a body of priests for God his Father : "Yea, as living stones, build yourselves to form a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual victims , Acceptable to God through Jesus Christ "(1 Peter 2.5). See also 1 Peter 2.9; Revelation 1.6.
A decision for today :
I want to enter fully into my service, to be responsible for my Christian life, to practice mercy and piety, all with respect for others, and in order to develop my spiritual maturity.
