"By grace you are saved by faith, and it does not come from you, it is the gift of God ; Not on the basis of works, that no one may boast ; For we are his work, having been created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has prepared in advance, that we might walk in them. "Ephesians 2: 8-10
Jesus is back in Capernaum after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves. To the crowd that follows him in the hope that the miracle will be repeated, Jesus shows what food is worth seeking, that "which dwells in eternal life" (John 6:27). "What do we have to do to accomplish the works of God ?" People ask (v.28). They want to know how to be pleasing to God. The answer of Jesus is unequivocal. A first work precedes all service : "The work of God is this : that ye believe in him whom he hath sent" (v. 29). There is only one thing that God expects of man : that he places his trust in his Son whom he has sent.
The verse of the day expresses well that man can do nothing, absolutely nothing, to obtain salvation, if not to believe. No human work, even admired by men, has ever saved a single human being.
When we have believed, that we have become children of God, it is normal to live with God and to perform the good works that he has prepared himself and that he places them on our path. It produces the context in which it asks us to do it and it puts us in touch with those who must benefit from it. To discern these good works prepared beforehand, we must live in intimacy with our Master, in fidelity.
Our belonging to the family of God gives us the privilege of performing good works. It is necessary to be quick to practice them in the discretion and dependence of God, to be, being separated from evil, "a vase with honor (that is, a noble use), sanctified, useful To the master, prepared for every good work "(2 Tim.2: 21).
God can employ in his service only clean vessels; A vase for a noble use is not a mere ornament, it is a useful vase !
