God is big

He holds the depths of the earth in his hand, and the peaks of the mountains are his. Psalm 95.4

With my wife, we stayed in Pont-en-Royans. From this town, at the foot of the Vercors massif between the departments of Isère and Drôme, we drove through remarkable roads sometimes carved out of steep walls. The most impressive are the alternation of vertiginous cliffs, imposing and rectilinear ridges for several kilometers, green valleys at altitude and deep and winding gorges.

Faced with the ramparts of this massif, crushed by impressive verticalities of limestone of several hundred meters - and sometimes in fear of a few rock falls despite the many retaining nets - our fragility, our dependence, our insignificance became obvious...

Many have said that nature is an open book that tells of the greatness and infinite wisdom of God (Psalm 19.2). It emphasizes that we should be struck with humility towards its author. I readily recognize it at the sight of the summits of the Vercors !

Jean Ferrat had his reasons for singing (La montagne, 1965) that the mountain is beautiful. Only, beyond our appreciations, may we have the lucidity to add in the recognition : "Because God, our creator, is great !"
