We understand from reading this passage from Ephesians that God always pursues a goal when He prunes us. God never does anything by chance.
"Therefore, rid yourself of lies, tell each one the truth to your neighbor, for we are members of one another. If you get angry, do not sin. May the sun not set over your anger, and leave no room for the devil. That the one who stole stops stealing ; that he rather gives himself the trouble to work honestly with his own hands to have something to give to the one in need. Let no unhealthy word come out of your mouth, but only good words which, according to needs, serve edification and transmit grace to those who hear them" (Ephesians 4: 25-29). Notice the reasons why God wants us to renounce lies, anger, theft, and bad words :
1 - "For we are members of one another" : so it is because God pursues a higher goal, that of the family. God has a greater vision, and he knows that by speaking truthfully, the whole family will be blessed.
2 - "leave no room for the devil" : God knows that if anger is manifested in our life until we sin, we will give access to the devil to act in our life, and it will be, not for our good, but for our harm.
3 - "to have something to give to the one in need" : God still has a global view. God wants us to do good by working to become a source of blessings. It's not for us, it's for others ! The "we" is already blessed, the "they" must be so through us!
4 - "who serve edification and give grace to those who hear them". If God does not want us to say bad words about people, it is to build them and to communicate to them a grace. God always has others in view.
