Good or bad conscience !

Hebrews 10:22 – ... hearts purified from an evil conscience...

We can reasonably think that the functioning of consciousness in human beings started when Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. As God had forbidden access to it, I believe that he does not want us to walk according to our conscience but rather according to his Word.

The Bible tells us about good conscience and bad conscience. How to sort ? I could give some symptoms here so that we are free from one of the most harmful effects of a bad conscience : guilt.

A bad conscience is always accusatory. Adam and Eve felt guilty for being naked. The second symptom is that they have hidden themselves from the presence of God, separating themselves from this beneficial presence. The third symptom is that both of them began to accuse the others for the fault committed (Eve : it's because of the snake. Adam : it's because of the woman you gave me). In summary, we could say that a bad conscience encloses in guilt, estrangement from God and resentment.

The good conscience allows itself to be convinced by the Holy Spirit who will often use the Word of God to warn us in the face of a temptation or to convince us after having committed evil, I say convince and not make people feel guilty ! It also prompts us to make good choices to please God. It finally brings us inner contentment because we feel approved by God. In summary, we could say that a good conscience comes from a sincere heart that allows itself to be challenged by God.

Our spiritual strength and our confidence before God will depend on how we get rid of this bad conscience.
