What do we expect from God ?
Eternal, have mercy on us ! We hope in you. Be our help every morning, and our deliverance in time of trouble ! Isaiah 33.2
If you pray ? few people ever pray, even among atheists ?, what is your morning prayer ? Does it resemble that of Isaiah ? Do you ask God for help every morning... and all day ? Or do you remember him only in times of trouble ?
I am more aware of my need for God's help. Not that circumstances have deteriorated or darkened, but because I am more and more eager to make my life fully useful and more and more aware that I am unable to do so on my own.
Above all, it is important that we be convinced that nothing lasting and truly good can come from ourselves if it is not God who inspires it and accomplishes it through us. And that should be our first thought when we wake up : “Lord, this day ? that you may still give me entirely ?, make it, you, through my thoughts, my words and my deeds, the best thing that you wish to expect from it. Have mercy on my limitations ; be my helper. It is from you alone that I hope and expect it."
But can't we also tell him our fears, our possible times of distress, or simply my worries about tomorrow ? Sure ! But we will live them serenely if our prayer has been, each morning, the expression of trust and love.

Proposed reading : Psalm 46, verses 2 to 8.
46.2 God is for us a refuge and a support, a help that never fails in distress.
46.3 Therefore we are fearless when the earth is upset, and the mountains totter in the heart of the seas,
46.4 when the waves of the sea roar, foam, rise until the mountains tremble. - Pause
46.5 There is a river whose currents gladden the city of God, the sanctuary of the dwellings of the Most High.
46.6 God is in her midst : she is not shaken ; God help her from the dawn of the morning.
46.7 Nations are agitated, kingdoms are shaken ; he makes his voice heard : the earth melts with terror.
46.8 The Eternal of hosts is with us ; the God of Jacob is a high retreat for us.
