Who knows today who JamesSimpson was and what he did? Yet his labors were the most important in medicine, at least in the years that followed.

Dr. James Young Simpson (1811-1870) was a Scottish physician and researcher who, among others, was the first to use chloroform as an anesthetic in humans. The use of this product spread rapidly throughout the world, used in particular to anesthetize a patient before surgery. The use of chloroform has drastically diminished since the advent of more modern anesthesia methods. Nevertheless, Simpson's research and the discovery of its application to man were major in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

During a course that Simpson gave to the University of Edinburgh, a student asked him what he considered his most important discovery. The students expected him to describe how he came to use chloroform. Simpson replied, "My most important discovery was when I discovered that I was a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Savior."

Great scientific discoveries, great inventions, all permitted by God, may have great success for a longer or shorter time, then they are overtaken by other discoveries and other inventions which replace them. Simpson understood this perfectly ; For him, only one discovery was of importance !

Researchers sometimes acquire a certain notoriety, a certain glory ; Usually they quickly fall into oblivion ... Who remembers today James Simpson ? As this physician understood, the discovery of Jesus Christ as Savior alone has eternal consequences. The blind man healed by the Lord Jesus could say : "I know one thing, that I was blind, and now I see" (John 9:25). It was very important for him ! It is vital for every man to pass from darkness to light, from spiritual darkness with a future of misfortune to a future of glory and eternal happiness. Blessed be the Lord for manifesting himself to man and making himself known as the Savior, the only way of heaven, the great discovery for the repentant sinner !
