Jesus enlightens all man

He (the man) answered him (to Jesus) : Master, I have kept all these commandments from my youth. Having looked at him, Jesus loved him, and he said to him : You are missing one thing : go and sell all that you have... But the man grew gloomy at this word and went away very sad, for he had great possessions. Mark 10: 20-22

This light was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens all human being. John 1: 9

This encounter brings Jesus face to face with what is usually called the rich young man. He was a Jew, zealous for God and obedient to the Law.

This man adopts a well-known behavior : he regards eternal life as a good which can be acquired through good behavior. He comes to see Jesus in whom he recognizes a guide. His question (v. 17) shows that he wishes to take stock of his spiritual situation.

In dialogue, Jesus reveals himself as the light and he sheds light on his condition. He leads him to take a different look at himself and all man. He reminds him that man can never really achieve good : No one is good except one : God (Mark 10:18).

Jesus then shows this young man that, despite his strict observance of the precepts of the Law, he has a real problem : he is more attached to money than to God. He therefore invites him to change his priorities : Go and sell all that you have... then come, and follow me (v. 21).

The Lord enlightens this man, reveals to him the reason for his anxiety, while showing him a deep interest : he looks at him, he loves him, but leaves him free of his choice. Unable to obey because he is still attached to his possessions, the young man leaves very sad.

By asking this man to sell everything he owns, Jesus is not teaching that this act is a means of salvation. He seeks to persuade him that he needs to be saved and that for that he must let go of whatever prevents him from following him.

It is so today. We need a lucid look at what we are and what we are attached to. It is the action of the Spirit that will bring light to our hearts.
