Jesus from house to house (11) Jesus in the house in Emmaus

"They approached the village where they were going ; [Jesus] said as if he were going further. But they pressed him, saying : Stay with us, for evening is drawing near, and day has come down. He entered to stay with them. And it came to pass, when he was at table with them, that he took bread, and blessed ; Then he broke it and distributed it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him ; But he became invisible and vanished from before them." Luke 24: 28-31

For the two disciples on their way to Emmaus, nothing will be more like before! Their Master was crucified and put into a tomb. All their hopes are wiped out. They go back to their village to try to start living again. On the way, they discuss, they analyze the situation ... Who was this Jesus in whom they had placed their trust ? For them, he is now "the disappeared".

A companion joins them and questions them. They do not recognize him. The resurrected Jesus (for he is) opens them the Scriptures by explaining to them the things that concern Him in all the Word of God. Their heart burns, but they still do not recognize it. They are approaching their home. In the evening, Jesus pretends to go on the road, but they invite him to their home. This captivating conversation warms their hearts ; To be able to prolong it, they urge Jesus who is going away, to enter their house. Jesus never imposes himself, but he is available for whoever asks for it.

Jesus opened to them the scriptures as they walked on the way ; He opens their hearts by offering him hospitality and opens their eyes by carrying out before them the gesture of the Master : to take the bread, to bless it, to break it and to distribute it to them. No more doubt is Jesus, he is risen, he is alive !

The Lord does not prolong his presence at Emmaus and disappears. In their turn, they are pressed by the ardent desire to inform their fellow-students of the great news which fills them with joy. They no longer fear now that nocturnal journey from which they had dissuaded their unknown companion.

The heart still burning with his words, the two men return with joy to Jerusalem to the other disciples to testify of the resurrection of the Lord, to report to them what he has told them and to explain to them how he revealed himself to them The fraction of bread.

On the road to our lives, we may be doing the same kind of reflection. But in times of despair, Jesus goes with us. He is there, close at hand, ready to reveal himself and show his love for us at home.
