Jesus from house to house (4) In Capernaum, in the house of mourning at Jairus

"There came a man named Jairus ; He was chief of the synagogue. He threw himself at Jesus feet and begged him to come to his house, because he had a single daughter, about twelve years old, and was dying." Luke 8:41, 42

As leader of the synagogue, Jairus is responsible for the organization of the Jewish worship, and in particular to ensure that the reading and teaching of the Scriptures are faithfully practiced. He is very different from the many Pharisees that Jesus encountered : he is animated by a remarkable faith, though harshly tried and exhausted. Jairus sees Jesus as his last resort to save his daughter from dying, so he throws himself at his feet, the man considered and important in the community, and begs him to come to his house. In the original Gospel according to Mark, the emotion of Jairus is betrayed by an utterly incomplete phrase when he implores Jesus : "My little girl is at the end ... so that, coming, you impose her hands" (Mark 5:23).

Jesus leaves to go to Jairus. But on the way the crowd pressed him and pressed him. A woman comes from behind to touch the edge of her garment to be cured of a loss of blood. According to the Law, it is impure, Jesus knows. But he takes care of this woman in trouble, despite the urgency of the condition of the daughter of Jairus.

This incident delayed Jesus. And then we learn from Jairus that the irremediable happened : "Your daughter is dead ; Does not matter to the master". All hope seems lost !

It is in this hopeless situation that Jesus appeals to the faith of Jairus and gives him a word that comforts and will comfort many other believers until today : "Fear not, believe only, and she will be saved".

Death is the occasion for the Lord to show his infinite power and great mercy : he resuscitates the young girl and makes her alive to her parents. The house of mourning is changed into a house of joy (Jer 31:13). His life can now give birth to other lives.
