"Marvelous"

"A child is born to us, a son has been given to us, and the government will be on his shoulder ; and his name shall be called Marvelous, Counselor (or Marvelous Counselor), Strong God, Father of the Century, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9: 6

In this prophecy concerning the Messiah, Isaiah combines both the reality of his humanity ("a child is born to us") and his divinity ("a son is given to us") (Ps 2, 7, Luke 1, 32). ). If the resurrection of the Son of God is the miracle of miracles, his incarnation is the mystery of mysteries.

It will be called "Marvelous". Isaiah makes the word "Marvelous" a name for the Messiah he announces. This name refers to what is not accessible to the understanding of man or contrary to all that he can conceive.

Jesus is "Marvelous" because he can take the sinner most degraded by vice to transform him into an heir ; "Marvelous", because he can make a blasphemer a worshiper ; "Marvelous", because it can pull a person from the deepest darkness to make him a child of light. "Marvelous" because it shines the light in the darkness. "Marvelous" because he is both sinless and the friend of sinners.

"Marvelous" when he read aloud this passage from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue of Nazareth : "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor ; he sent me to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and to the blind to return to sight ; to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the pleasing year of the Lord" (Luke 4:18, 19), "Marvelous" when he adds : "Today this Scripture, as you understand it, is fulfilled".

All the words he uttered, all the acts he performed, speak of him as "Marvelous". He is, not only in what he says or does, but in the unfathomable mystery of his person, for "no one knows the Father except the Son" (Matt.11, 27).

It has been said : as great and wonderful as his names are, there is none that is not contained and wrapped in the name we know best : Jesus (the Lord is Savior), because his name includes all the grace that God could manifest in the man Christ Jesus.
