My peace and that of others

"Seek the peace of the city where I have transported you, and pray to the LORD for her ; for in his peace shall your peace be." Jeremiah 29. 7

Like the Jews deported to Babylon, the Christian is a stranger on the earth. Our city is in heaven, from where we also expect the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior (Phil 3:20). On the other hand, if Israel knew that its captivity would end when 70 years were fulfilled (Jeremiah 29:10), the time of the coming of the Lord to seek his own is not fixed. This in no way dispenses us from being model citizens in this world and calling divine blessing on the society in which we live. "Therefore, I urge, above all else, to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgiving for all men, for kings, and all who are in high places, so that we may lead a peaceful and peaceful life. in all piety and honesty. This is good and pleasing to our Savior God" (1 Tim 2: 1-3).

This exhortation takes on a special meaning when one remembers it was written in 65 or 66 while the Christians were terribly persecuted under Nero.

- On the social level, the believer is confronted in the world with situations where he should put into practice a true Christianity. This aspect of faith is demonstrated by works (James 2: 14-17).

- In work, whether one is independent or salaried, everyone has a responsibility towards others. The attitude of the believer influences his professional environment.

"We urge you, brethren, to make more and more progress, to apply yourself to live peacefully, to do your own business and to work with your own hands, as we have commanded you, to walk honorably towards those outside and not needing anyone" (1 Thes, 4, 10-12).

- We also have duties vis-à-vis our city or our village : to provide peace, to think of the true good of souls and to pray for those with whom we live.

In neighborhood relations, litigation is frequent or we deliberately ignore each other. It is perhaps especially in these cases that the verse of the day applies. My neighbor sees me living, with my family, with my friends ; he hears my words and those of my children. He must receive a positive impression if we want him to be drawn to the gospel.
